The London Borough of Barnet in the Barnet Taxis area was created in 1965 is situated in the NW part of London with a population in excess of 335,000. The Borough of Barnet covers a fair area including the towns of Barnet, Edgeware, Finchley, Golders Green, Hendon, Mill Hill and Totteridge which are all in the Barnet Taxis area. The Borough has the M1 and North Circular running through it and the M25 nearby; it is quite easy to reach especially by Barnet Taxis .
There is quite a history to the district with Hendon being settled by the Romans and the Edgeware Road originally formed part of the road later known as Watling Street; there weren't any Barnet Taxis available then. The name Hendon is derived from the Saxon meaning 'high hill' circa 1005. The manor is recorded in the Doomsday Book. From Roman Times until the 16th century Hendon was covered by woods and supplied London with fuel-wood. The development of coal mining killed off the fuel-wood industry and the fields were used for hay production; to feed the horses vital for London's economy. They too were pushed out by the train and motor vehicle forerunners of the current Barnet Taxis. Some of the wealthy built large house as escapes from the hectic polluted city; a few of these house survive today including Hendon Hall and Penfold House. Hendon was also famous for the Hendon Aerodrome which was used from 1910 until it closed in 1968; it is now home to the RAF Museum, The Grahame Park Estate and the Peel Centre better known as Hendon Police College; well worth a visit by Barnet Taxis.
Brent Cross Shopping Centre one of the first big shopping centres was built on the old Renters farm site; is within a short drive by Barnet Taxis. The farm was originally owned by Geoffrey de Renter in 1309; other parts of the farm and land were used for Hendon Sewage Works, private housing and the Hendon Cottage Hospital.
Finchley was another part that was developed by the wealthy City people keen to live in the country outside London; they find it easy to commute now especially in Barnet Taxis. Barnet up until the late 19th century was agricultural with cattle markets and fairs; East Finchley had a major pig market. As the suburbs expanded some of the farms turned to milk production; College Farm in Finchley, which is still going, was the main farm for 'Express Dairies'.
The Railways arrived in 1850 with New Barnet developing as a suburb near the station; the next railways came in the 1860's the Midlands Mainline and the GNR Suburban Lines. The Underground to Golders Green opened in 1907 and was extended through Hendon to Edgeware in the 1920's; all have Barnet Taxis operating near them.
The Borough of Barnet has developed mainly as a result of the railways, the underground and Barnet Taxis which have made it easier for people to travel further more easily and more comfortably.
There is plenty to do In the Borough of Barnet with Leisure Centres at Edgeware, Barnet and Hendon offering a range of activities; a few minutes away by Barnet Taxis. Barnet Sports Development runs courses on Football, Frisbee, Volleyball and Tennis. There are clubs for Boxing, Badminton, Thai Boxing and Fencing; with Swimming an option at a number of pools; a quick trip by Barnet Taxis.
Under the Barnet Taxis banner there are two types of Barnet Taxis: -
Private Hire Operators – these are licensed Barnet Taxis vehicles that must pre-booked and work on fixed priced, zoned fares; they cannot be flagged down in the street and must be pre-booked by phone, ‘walk in’ to one of their offices or on the internet. The vehicles will have a ‘Private Hire Badge’ issued by Transport for London attached to the front and back windows of the vehicle and the drivers will be wearing their ‘Licensed Private Hire Driver Badge’ whilst they are actively working.
Private Hire Drivers have to undergo a medical and are checked by the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) regularly to make sure they are fit and safe to work with the public.
Hackney Carriage Operators – these are licensed Barnet Taxis that can be either pre-booked or they can be flagged down in the street; they work on meters, but you may be able to negotiate on a long distance fare. They are in effect variable priced; depending on route and time taken to reach your destination, the price is worked out by the taxi meter. They must display a ‘Taxi’ sign, normally on the roof; have a valid taxi meter, visible to the passengers at all times; have a ‘Taxi Licence Plate’ attached to the rear of the vehicle and the drivers will be wearing a ‘Licensed Taxi Driver Badge’ whilst working.
Taxi Drivers have to undergo a medical and are checked by the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) regularly to make sure they are fit and safe to work with the public.
Barnet Taxis that are London Hackney Carriage metered cabs tend to be slightly dearer than Barnet Taxis that are Private Hire and work on zoned pricing.
Which one you use is your choice; but make certain you are getting into a licensed Barnet Taxis vehicle with a licensed driver. There is a risk of getting into an unlicensed cab, they operate in lots of areas and the Barnet Taxis area is not immune to this; they are neither safe nor insured properly; be warned.
Remember it now against the law to smoke in all Barnet Taxis at any time whether they are hackney carriage or private hire vehicles. This also applies to the drivers.
